Thermal Insulation for Special Applications / Custom Solutions
The tailored cover technology is one of the most universal and versatile insulation methods. SUM’s many years of experience and implemented CAD/CAM digital technologies allow us to meet virtually any challenge. We are open to demanding applications, develop prototypes, create new solutions and support our customers with our expertise.
SUM Guard covers can be used as comprehensive insulation for enclosed process lines, equipment with exceptionally complex geometries, as well as modular insulation systems that can be partially removed and continuously adapted to current operational needs.

Removable industrial insulation in the form of thermal insulation covers is used wherever periodic removal of insulation is required in order to:
- carry out emergency repairs,
- perform scheduled inspections, e.g.:
- pipe wall thickness measurements,
- leak testing of valves,
- inspection of valve condition,
- inspection of paint or coating systems,
- access to selected equipment components,
- access to instrumentation,
- maintenance work,
- as a supplement to permanent insulation in areas with irregular shapes that are difficult to cover with conventional metal cladding insulation.
This technology uniquely provides maintenance teams with unrestricted access to any section of the installation at any time, without the laborious and waste-generating destruction of insulation.
Inner and outer technical fabric layers – a wide range of glass fibre and silica fabrics is available in different impregnation variants and coating types (silicone, PTFE, PU, aluminium, etc.). The selection of the appropriate fabric for a given application determines the thermal and chemical resistance of the cover.
Insulation core – Approximately 80% of our products utilise mechanically needled E-Glass insulation felt. Unlike conventional mineral wool insulation, it offers:
- High density: from 130 to 180 kg/m³
- Excellent water resistance – even after complete saturation, it regains 100% of its insulating properties once dried
- Outstanding durability and mechanical integrity – resistant to deformation caused by bending, with no delamination or fibre breakdown
Silica mats, synthetic rubber, Pyrogel and other materials are also used.
Fastening and edge finishing systems are always tailored to the specific application, taking into account operating temperatures, surrounding equipment and the user’s individual requirements. Available fastening solutions include industrial hook-and-loop fasteners (including high-temperature grades), stainless steel buckle straps (standard), drawstring fasteners, stainless steel hooks and other fixing systems.
Identification plate – Each cover is assigned a unique serial number, and its design specification is stored indefinitely in the SUM database. The identification plate may also include any information required by the customer, such as installation location, valve numbering or asset identification details.
All fittings in every version of a SUM cover are made of stainless steel.
Exceptionally strong seams, sewn with stainless steel thread braided with Kevlar®, ensure long service life and high thermal resistance.
