Chemical-Resistant Thermal Insulation
SUM Chemical Guard covers, thanks to the use of PTFE (Teflon)-coated glass fabrics, offer high resistance to chemically aggressive substances such as acids, alkalis, solvents and alcohols. They are suitable for industrial valves operating at both high and low temperatures (in the range of -40°C to +300°C).
They reduce the surface temperature of equipment and limit heat losses caused by convection and thermal radiation. At the same time, they allow quick and easy access to insulated components through temporary removal of the insulation cover.
Designed for repeated use, they can be removed and reinstalled without damage.
Similarly to standard insulation covers, SUM Chemical Guard is most commonly used for insulating pipeline system components as well as structures and equipment found in the chemical industry, such as:
- valves, strainers, flanged connections and flanges up to DN 1200
- pumps, heat exchangers and tanks
- instrumentation and control equipment
- expansion joints
- mud separators, steam traps and storage vessels
- reactor domes and inspection manways
- washers and heat exchangers
The SUM Chemical Guard technology performs particularly well in installations used for the production of agrochemicals, chlor-alkali products and surfactants, as well as in oil processing and mining applications.
SUM Chemical Guard covers ensure reliable operation in installations exposed to highly corrosive substances. The outer layer protects the covers from damage during frequent cleaning of valves, while the PTFE coating prevents dirt adhesion to the surface.
SUM Chemical Guard covers significantly improve maintenance operations by providing rapid access to areas where leaks may occur, enabling quick leak detection, repair and reinstallation of the covers. The SUM insulation does not degrade during such operations, allowing routine inspection and service work to be carried out without the involvement of specialist insulation crews.
Inner and outer technical fabric layers – single-sided PTFE (Teflon)-coated glass fabric.
Insulation fill – in 80% of products, mechanically needled E-Glass glass fibre matting is used, which, unlike standard mineral wools, is characterised by:
- high density: 130 to 180 kg/m³
- water resistance – even after full saturation, once dried it regains 100% of its insulating properties
- durability and structural integrity – it does not deform under bending and does not delaminate or fragment
Other materials used include silicate mats, synthetic rubber, Pyrogel and others.
The fastening and closure system is always adapted to the application, taking into account temperature, surrounding equipment layout and individual user requirements. Industrial Velcro (including high-temperature variants), stainless steel buckle straps (standard), drawstrings and stainless steel hooks are used.
Nameplate – each cover is assigned a unique serial number, and its design is stored indefinitely in the SUM database. The nameplate may also include any user-required information (location, equipment numbering, etc.).
All fittings in every version of the SUM cover are made of stainless steel.
Extremely strong seams made from stainless steel-reinforced Kevlar® thread ensure long service life and high thermal resistance.
