Thermal Insulation for Steam Valves and District Heating Systems
SUM Maintenance Guard insulation covers are designed for continuous operation on valves and equipment with surface temperatures of up to 260°C. The outer layer is manufactured from silicone-coated glass fabric, providing resistance to weather conditions and most chemical substances commonly encountered in industrial environments, including oils, greases and water.
The covers reduce the surface temperature of equipment while minimising heat loss caused by convection and thermal radiation. At the same time, they allow quick and easy access to insulated components through temporary removal of the insulation cover.
Designed for repeated use, they can be removed and reinstalled multiple times without damage.

SUM Maintenance Guard covers are also used to insulate valves and pipework in district heating chambers, where their mechanical strength, resistance to water and brine ingress, flexibility and durability make them particularly effective. Regardless of operating conditions, they significantly reduce heat losses and improve the efficiency of both existing and newly constructed distribution networks. In these demanding environments, the service life of the covers exceeds that of most conventional insulation solutions.
Removable industrial insulation jackets are used wherever periodic removal of insulation is required for:
- carrying out emergency repairs,
- performing scheduled inspections, such as:
- pipe wall thickness measurements,
- valve leak testing,
- valve condition inspections,
- inspection of paint and protective coating systems,
- access to selected equipment components,
- access to instrumentation and measurement devices,
- maintenance work,
- supplementing permanent insulation in areas with irregular shapes or locations that are difficult to access using conventional metal-clad insulation systems,
- tool-free installation and removal.
This technology provides maintenance teams with unrestricted access to any section of the installation without the need for the time-consuming removal and disposal of conventional insulation materials.
Inner and outer technical fabric layers – glass fabric coated with silicone
Insulation fill – in 80% of products, mechanically needled E-Glass glass fibre matting is used, which, unlike standard mineral wools, is characterised by:
- high density: 130 to 180 kg/m³
- water resistance – even after full saturation, once dried it regains 100% of its insulating properties
- durability and structural integrity – it does not deform under bending and does not delaminate or fragment
Other materials used include silicate mats, synthetic rubber, Pyrogel and others.
The fastening and closure systems are always adapted to the specific application, taking into account temperature conditions, surrounding equipment layout and individual user requirements. Industrial Velcro (including high-temperature variants), stainless steel buckle straps (standard), drawstring cords and stainless steel hooks are used.
Nameplate – each cover is assigned a unique serial number, and its design is stored indefinitely in the SUM database. The nameplate may also include any user-required information (location, equipment identification, etc.).
All fittings in every version of the SUM cover are made of stainless steel.
Extremely strong seams made from stainless steel-reinforced Kevlar®-wrapped thread ensure long service life and high thermal resistance.
