Kevlar® threads in SUM covers

The threads we use in the production of our covers are a combination of a steel core and a braid of para-aramid fibres, providing excellent mechanical strength.
The metallic threads are resistant to high temperatures. The steel core, when not subjected to external loads, withstands temperatures of around 1100°C; when under mechanical stress, it withstands approximately 600°C.
Para-aramid, on the other hand, retains its properties within a temperature range from -200°C to 245°C. It does not conduct electricity and is characterised by low thermal conductivity. When exposed to flame, para-aramid does not melt or drip but decomposes at around 500°C without releasing toxic substances.

Extremely strong seams made from stainless steel threads braided with Kevlar® ensure long service life and high thermal resistance of our SUM Guard covers.

Do you know which fibres are considered among the strongest and toughest materials on Earth? Spider silk!
In addition to being extremely strong and lightweight, it is also biodegradable and has potential applications in the production of durable materials such as components used in the space industry. Unfortunately, its limited availability prevents its use on an industrial scale. A single spider can produce only trace amounts of silk, and breeding large numbers of these arthropods is a difficult task.
For years, scientists have been attempting to produce artificial spider silk. Some time ago, researchers at Washington University in St. Louis succeeded in producing spider silk using genetically modified bacteria.
Spider silk produced by modified bacteria is stronger than steel and para-aramids!!!

Who knows—perhaps in a few years we will be using this spider silk produced with the help of genetically modified bacteria in the manufacture of our covers as well!!!
